Let’s make sure your recycling is not a waste
• IT’S important that residents’ good intentions to recycle don’t become pointless because contaminants such as food waste in the recycling bin mean entire loads are rejected and sent to landfill.
Our landfill sites are quickly running out of space and it’s vital we aren’t dumping anything that could be recycled or reused.
The government has set ever-decreasing annual landfill targets for local authorities and will impose prohibitive fines for every tonne of waste that is landfilled.
So making sure the right things go in recycling bins not only helps protect the environment for future generations, it also helps us save increasing costs of disposal and collection.
Further to your recent letters, this is why we previously carried out participation surveys to find out what and how people were recycling.
The information helped us to improve communication with residents – for example to remind people that they can recycle all food and drink cans, including aerosols.
It also helped us see why some people might not be recycling – like lack of storage space for containers – so we can look at ways to address these.
Our only interest is maximising recycling – no information was kept on individual addresses
Now and in future we are going to concentrate on speaking directly to residents, answering any questions they might have and finding out what additional information they need to make best use of our recycling services.
Camden is already in the top 10 of London boroughs for its recycling performance and in the top five for dry recyclables. It is important we all continue to do our part – buying less packaging to reduce what we throw away, reusing what we can and recycling wherever possible - because recycling is worth it and it makes a big difference.
