Platform for future? Plans to create more space for station users
WALKING around West Hampstead Thameslink station could become much easier if plans revealed by Network Rail are given the go-ahead.
Network Rail, who own the land around the station, are set to submit ambitious proposals to Camden Council in November that would change the face of the West Hampstead interchange area between the Thameslink and the London Overground and Underground stations.
Under the plans, due to be discussed at a drop-in session on Wednesday at West Hampstead Library, the landlords want to widen the pavement around the new entrance they are building in Iverson Road, which needs planning permission.
They also want to demolish the two shop units on the corner of the junction, jewellers Joule and kebab shop Basket Grill.
To make the station greener, they plan to plant trees in the street and a “living roof” on top of the new station building, as well as creating cycling racks to encourage people cycle to the station.
Describing the junction as a “notorious pinch-point” for travellers between the three stations, Network Rail’s plans come as the station is extended to make room for longer trains and more passengers.
Should the plans be approved by Camden – which has already indicated it is keen to improve the area – they should be completed by next summer. |
