Crackdown on persistent parking ticket evaders
THE Town Hall was last night (Wednesday) expected to be handed the power to impound cars whose owners have received three unpaid parking tickets.
Under the pilot scheme, the council will also be able to seize vehicles if owners have at least three tickets that were issued in neighbouring boroughs. Wardens in Westminster, Hammersmith and Fulham, Ealing and Kensington and Chelsea will be able to impound cars with unpaid Camden tickets.
Whether or not they are legally parked at the time will make no difference. The scheme looks set to start in January on the grounds that it will help track down “persistent parking evaders”.
In Camden alone, 2,716 vehicles currently have more than three open parking tickets past the point of appeal and are therefore considered persistent evaders. Of those 2,716 vehicles, a total of 14,797 unpaid tickets account for more than £1m due to Camden.
The top 20 persistent evaders have a total of 593 penalty charge notices outstanding between them. |
