Twitter meet-up success
NEIGHBOURS in West Hampstead who only knew each other by sending online Twitter messages met for the first time on Monday night.
People at The Alice House Bar in West End Lane attended the first “Tweet-up”, organised on the social networking site.
Normally strangers who would pass each other in the street without saying hello, the party-goers were all connected by following events from West Hampstead on Twitter.
PR manager Sarah Reardon, who took part in the gathering on Monday, said that while the party was “quite bizarre” at first, everyone had been talking about it online beforehand and at the very least had Twitter in common.
“It was quite exciting to meet some new faces,” said Ms Reardon, 25.
According to Ms Reardon, as people walked through the door the organiser, Jonathan Turton, kept an eye out for lost-looking souls.
One West Hampstead resident and avid Tweeter who wasn’t lost but couldn’t make it was Stephen Fry.
During the party he tweeted: “So sorry – only just seen the hashtag. Love to you all. Hope it was a triumph.”
“That was probably the highlight of the party,” said Ms Reardon, along with a surprise appearance by Swiss Cottage councillor and deputy Camden leader Andrew Marshall.
The bash was such a success another has been pencilled in for December.
