Remembering Bobby De Joia
THE wood, fittingly, came from America. On Saturday, members of Heath Hands and the Vale of Health Society gathered to celebrate the life of Bobby De Joia – the New Yorker who settled in Hampstead and set up the Heath conservation volunteer group Heath Hands.
Bobby died last year and friends – including a contingent who had travelled a from across the Atlantic to mark the event – unveiled a bench in her honour – and it was carved from a Californian Redwood.
Bobby had established the volunteer group after seeing the success of a similar scheme in New York’s Central Park. Members of the Vale of Health Society, which Bobby was also involved in, planted a tree in her memory.
Heath Hands chairwoman Renata Shaw, who succeeded Bobby in the post, said: “She left such a wonderful legacy, and had such enthusiasm. There is no better memorial to her than the continuing success of Heath Hands.” |
