Gary, happy to have his van – and his stock – back
Gary, happy to have his van – and his stock – back
So who nicked florist Gary’s blooming van?

HE has a reputation for quick delivery, taking birthday joy to relatives and wooing bouquets to loved ones: but florist Gary Covington did not expect his super-fast van to be the the subject of one of the stranger heists police officers have had to deal with.
Gary’s wife Sue, who also works at the florist based in Swains Lane, Highgate, was unloading flowers he had bought from the market on Friday morning when an opportunistic thief leapt in to the drivers seat, fired up the engine and sped off.
The couple watched as nearly £1,000-worth of floral delights disappeared up Swains Lane.
The couple called the police, who promptly appeared and started looking for the distinctive van, which has Gary’s business name and numbers emblazoned in bold lettering down the side.
Mr Covington said: “We were getting out our stock and left the van for a moment as we carried flowers inside. Before we knew it, the van was being driven off with all our day’s fresh stock in the back.”
The van was later spotted being driven round the Archway area and police managed to stop it in Northwood Road, Highgate – a single lane street that snakes down from the village. But the thief jumped out and ran off before officers could catch him – leaving the van and its fragrant booty behind.
Mr Covington was full of praise for the Boys in iris-Blue. He added: “I was amazed at how quickly the police reacted – we had the van back within the hour. If any coppers at Kentish Town fancy a new job, they could be our emergency delivery service for forgotten wedding anniversaries.”
A police spokesman said: “A forensic team have looked at the vehicle and we have a number of leads we are pursuing.”
