Station to re-open escalator

CAMDEN Town Tube station should return to full operations next week with the completion of a three-month escalator replacement project – but business groups and unions have warned unless it is redeveloped it will be a safety hazard and obstacle to regeneration.
The station has been possible to enter by stairs only since work began on one of the station’s escalators in July. Last night (Wednesday), TfL said the works would finish on Tuesday as scheduled.
Simon Pitkeathley is chief executive of business forum Camden Town Unlimited. He said: “From a business perspective we need the tube station not only to work properly with both escalators but to be developed and improved.”
An RMT union rep for the area, whose London Underground contract prevents his being named, said: “There is no money for any refurbishment or future developments- it has all been put on hold. It needs work urgently. There are serious safety issues with the numbers of people at Camden- there’s problems there every night.”
A TfL spokeswoman said: “Some time ago London Underground identified Camden Town as a station that would benefit from an upgrade to increase capacity, reduce congestion and improve access and interchange. We are also working to improve the reliability of the escalators as part of a network-wide programme.”
