Harriers book run in Nationals

A TRIUMPHANT team of runners from Highgate Harriers Athletics Club qualified for the National Championships on Sunday with a series of top performances at the Rushmoor Arena in Aldershot.
Highgate had to finish in the first 25 clubs out of a field of 78 teams in the Southern Road Relay Six-Stage Championships.
It was a target that the athletes pulled together to achieve as they took 20th place to confirm their spot at the Nationals, which will be held in Sutton Coldfield, West Midlands, on October 17.
Highgate’s fastest man on the day was Oxford University student David Bruce, who clocked a time of 18 minutes, 30 seconds in the first leg.
Team-mates Peter Downie, Ryan McKinlay, Stephen Thompson, Chris Beecham and Henry Dodwell also recorded good times to gain valuable points.
For the first time in many years, Highgate had a team in the Southern Veterans Championships, held just before the main event in Aldershot.
Alex Davidson, Kevin Lineham, John O’Shea and Craig Ross all put in creditable runs to record an overall time of 1:29.40 and help Highgate finish 17th out of 39 teams.
Elsewhere, Duncan Burbidge showed a return to form for Highgate when he finished third in the Serpentine 5k road race with a time of 16 mins, 30 secs.
