Golden grow! Blooming joy for gardeners

IS that gold glistening in the flowerbeds of Waterlow Park?
Camden’s first park became the jewel in the borough’s crown this week when it scooped gold in the London in Bloom awards.
The Highgate open space was one of only six parks across the capital – and the first in Camden’s history – to achieve the top grade for excellence.
The borough as a whole was awarded silver in the competition, which also recognises sustainable conservation and education.
Leisure chief Councillor Flick Rea hailed “the vital role” Camden’s parks played in improving quality of life, adding: “This gold award demonstrates what a special asset Waterlow Park is. There’s nothing quite like it.”
Catharine Wells, treasurer of the Friends of Waterlow Park, said the park had plans to build on its success with a number of projects being considered, including reopening the aviary, establishing beehives and planting fruit trees.
