Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 17 September 2009

Why the rush with £5bn ‘New Town’?

THE massive £5billion “Brent Cross New Town” will be decided by Barnet planning committee on September 23 (6.30pm at Hendon Town Hall).
It seems likely the scheme will be approved.
Camden Friends of the Earth opposes this massive scheme, because the “green-wash” of the PR machine behind the developers cannot hide the fact it is a very regressive scheme.
London is a mainly Victorian city, and we cannot achieve the government’s target of at least 26 per cent reduction of carbon by 2020, if we do not make these huge new schemes of pristine quality. Mayor Boris Johnson also has a preferred standard, set out in Sustainable Design and Construction which states that major new developments should be zero carbon emission developments (ZEDs).
The Brent Cross developers assert “It will not be technically or commercially viable for the entire development at Brent Cross to be a ZED.”
They say technology is not yet advanced enough to achieve that aim.
But why the rush?
Let us reject the plan for Brent Cross until a ZED is possible.
Both Camden and Brent councils are opposing the Brent Cross new town plan, which will, according to Barnet’s own figures, put more than 29,000 extra cars on our local roads every day.
We need the whole matter to be called in by the secretary of state for proper consultation.
