New 20mph limit for danger road

A NEW 20 mile per hour speed limit is to be introduced on one of Hampstead’s most dangerous roads – and the scheme includes new cameras to police it.
Fitzjohn’s Avenue, which runs from Swiss Cottage up to Hampstead Village, has often been at the centre of complaints of drivers going too fast. Surrounded by primary schools and used by cyclists, over the years there have been a number of accidents, leading to residents and schools to campaign for traffic-calming measures.
Transport for London (TfL) now plan to install a new set of cameras that clock drivers’ average speed – due to be set at 20 mph.
The cameras are new, and Fitzjohn’s Avenue is part of a London-wide trial to test how well they work. Drivers will get caught on film and issued with tickets if their speed goes above the new limit.
Fitzjohn’s primary school headteacher Rob Earrey said: “Whilst we need to be conscious of the fact that this is a conservtion area, any measure that can help tackle the speed, and amount, of traffic on and around Fitzjohn’s Avenue is to be welcomed.”
Frognal and Fitzjohn’s Safer Neighbourhood Panel chairman Rupert Terry said: “In the past, there used to be radar traps and panda cars ready to pull you over, but that has not happened for the best part of 20 years. They have put a speed camera on the Finchley Road and people do slow down for it, but then they speed up again. Will they do the same here? It’s a big issue for us.”
Town Hall environment chief Conservative councillor Chris Knight said: “We can now introduce the most up-to-date technology to slow drivers down and help keep residents and school children as safe as possible.”
