Long, tall, story costs me £20
• JUST after 8am last Saturday our doorbell rang; the post no longer gets delivered so early, and I was cautious.
“Who are you?”
“I’m Andrea, a neighbour. You’ve seen my husband Steve in the street, that tall man.”
I opened the door and said: “What are you doing?” She was startled for a moment, but when I said that I thought she was a Jehovah’s witness, she laughed and said: “Now at least you have made me laugh – you have made my day. I live at 15a. I’m a nurse. I’ve lost my contact lens and can’t see to drive to work and need to get a minicab to Enfield. Could you lend me some money? My brother is coming later this morning and he’ll pay you back. He’ll be here in three quarters of an hour.” I went to get my purse. I said to her: “So, you lost your contact lens and now you need money?”
She interrupted: “Well, my daughter – oh, it’s a long story. I need £20. I really need to do something about my lenses.”
I was silly enough to be taken in and gave her the money. And off she went. It all happened in a few minutes. As soon as she had gone I knew that I would never see this money back.
That afternoon I saw a local friend and relayed the story. The same thing, with a slight twist to the story, had happened to him. It sounded like the same woman.
