Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 10 September 2009

Priority is to act now to prevent road fatalities

• FOR over a year we have been asking Camden Council to address road safety around Marchmont Street and Tavistock Street.
Following a tragic death the Liberal Democrat/ Conservative-run council has finally agreed to address the issue and has found funding. While this is welcome they should have considered doing this many months before.
It is essential that the council addresses the issue of speeding drivers in the area if pedestrians are going to be safe.
We have asked Camden to consider putting a speed camera or traffic-calming on Tavistock Street or making it a 20mph zone. The council has so far said that it is unwilling to do this as casualties need to reach a certain level before they can act.
It is astonishing that when a community is calling for action on an issue that the council says it will have to wait. We all have a duty to prevent accidents rather than let accidents mount up.
We call on the administration in the town hall to stop sitting on their hands and act on this issue as a priority.
King’s Cross and Bloomsbury residents should not have to wait for another road fatality of serious injury before Camden does something about this.
