Yuksel Unal
Kebab man: Don’t take away my business

EVERY week for more than 30 years Yuksel Unal has been serving up his home-made falafel and spiced kebab meat to the hungry punters of West Hampstead.
The 59-year-old starts early and leaves late – it’s been like that ever since he took over the building in West End Lane in 1980.
But as of last month, he has six months to clear out. Without any warning, Network Rail, who own the site, gave Mr Unal, and his next-door neighbour Joule jewellery, notice to leave.
Mr Unal, who can remember when he was one of just two take-aways in West Hampstead, says he has nowhere to go and will be left homeless because he lives above the shop.
Network Rail have told him they want to turn the property into a ticket office.
He had just spent £9,000 kitting out his business with computers to bring in new clientele when the letter telling him to leave landed on the doormat.
“It’s bad. They should really have told me before,” he said. “It’s not the way, not discussing anything after all these years.”
A Network Rail spokesman said: “We have looked at a number of options for the redevelopment of the station – and we informed the tenants of our plans at the earliest opportunity.”
