Andy man: Popular electrical stores boss dies
FRIENDS have paid tribute to an electrician who lived by the motto, “I’ll get it for you.
Andy Yeorghaki, who has died aged 66, was best known for running independent shops in Kentish Town and Queen’s Crescent and his gigantic Alsatian dog, Rocky, who would sit behind the counter eating sausages.
Tom Duran, a close friend and long-term colleague, said: “I think that was the biggest dog I’ve ever seen. He loved it, and it loved him. Rocky would bark at all the customers, but they kept coming back. He will be sorely missed in Kentish Town.
“His shop was a really nice place – it had a barber shop feel to the place. There were always people sitting about chatting. People would go in and then have to come back again later because they had forgotten to buy what they wanted.
“Andy’s favourite phrase was, ‘if I haven’t got it, I’ll get it for you’. Independent shops survive like that.”
Mr Yeorghaki was born in his Cypriot mother’s house in Delancey Street, Camden Town, and stayed there for his entire life. He went to Cavendish primary school and St Richard of Chichester secondary school.
After leaving school, he ran three shops selling electrical goods and offering repairs for household appliances – Roundhouse Electronic in Chalk Farm Road between 1985-1995, Station Radio 9, and two branches of BAR Electricals in Kentish Town High Road and later Malden Road until 2009.
He officially “retired” this year, but kept helping out at SA Electricals in Kentish Town High Road until his lung cancer took hold.
The stores he opened now sell kebabs and vintage clothes, but his old “BAR Electricals” sign still hangs above the Malden Road branch.
Mr Duran added: “He was bored when he wasn’t working. He loved watching Formula 1 and Michael Schumacher – but apart from that he didn’t have many hobbies really.”
Mr Yeorghaki’s funeral was held in the Greek Orthodox Church in Kentish Town yesterday (Wednesday). |
