Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 27 August 2009

Mayor Ray was a tireless public transport campaigner

• IT was with great sadness that I read of the death of former councillor and Camden mayor Ray Adamson.
Ray and I worked closely together in the 1990s on issues which were very close to his heart, public transport and in particular the bus service.
Being a regular bus user Ray would frequently bend my ear about the unreliability of the 46 bus route which he experienced daily travelling from his home in Gospel Oak to Camden Town Hall.
As a photographer he was very much aware of the contrast of shades and took a particular interest in how real time information was displayed on the Underground and at bus stops.
Being a partially- sighted person he would explain how much easier it was to see the colour orange rather than red as this gave more contrast and made it easier to distinguish between characters – a view now widely accepted today. As a member of the council’s public transport liaison group Ray was more than able to make his views known on this subject and indeed was a character himself.
Ray also had concerns about obstructions caused by street furniture and took a particular interest in bus shelters, confronting me in a live BBC Radio 4 interview on the subject.
We took Ray seriously and introduced the changes he recommended.
I pay tribute to Ray for enlightening me and my former colleagues on a whole range of issues and often think of him when I come across many of these in daily life. Thanks Ray.
