Edgar heartache as world watches
THERE was heartache for Somers Town sprinter Tyrone Edgar on Sunday when he was disqualified in the semi-finals of the 100m at the Athletics World Championships.
The controversy started to unfold in Berlin when triple Olympic champion Usain Bolt made the opening false start to earn all eight athletes a warning.
Edgar was then ruled to have transgressed the second time, earning automatic disqualification, although replays and initial reaction times seemed to suggest that the decision was harsh.
“I don’t think it was a false start,” said the 27-year-old, who was also disqualified at the London Grand Prix last month.
“To me it looked pretty good, but there is nothing I can do. I am not going to argue the point. I am disappointed right now because I reckon I would have made the final.”
Jamaican speed demon Bolt set a stunning new record of 9.58 seconds to claim gold.
Archway’s Dwain Chambers was Great Britain’s sole representative in the final, finishing sixth in a season’s best of 10 seconds flat.
Highgate Harrier Simeon Williamson didn’t make it past the quarter-finals after finishing fifth with a time of 10.23 seconds. |
