Town Hall annexe to be ditched for building on railway lands
THE Town Hall is considering opening new offices on the King’s Cross redevelopment site, the New Journal has learned.
Under plans being seriously considered by senior figures, Camden Council would ditch the annexe building connected to its main Town Hall block on Judd Street and reorganise its staffing accommodation needs, partly making use of offices in the railway lands redevelopment.
The annexe, which has been touted around developers for several months, faces demolition with council sources predicting it could become a new hotel, possibly several storeys high.
Camden wants rid of the annexe – one of the first things people see when they come out of St Pancras station – because it says the maintenance costs are too high.
And staff with offices in the building may now find themselves in railway lands if the right deal can be struck. The council, however, will not say what exact location it would prefer for new offices or with whom it is discussing the
matter.
The council’s planning committee ignored calls for fewer offices and more affordable homes for the redevelopment of King’s Cross when a masterplan was examined at the Town Hall.
A council press official said: “We are exploring the most cost-effective way of providing the office accommodation we need in the King’s Cross area along with a new and improved St Pancras library. We are exploring various options to achieve this goal including the sale of the annexe and the purchase of a new site in the locality. As such we are in talks with a number of land owners and developers active in King’s Cross.” |
