Abuser given school driver job

THE family of a boy abused by a convicted paedophile who was given a job driving taxis for Camden’s schools have lodged official complaints against the police and the Town Hall after the attacker was jailed indefinitely on Monday.
The man’s 15 convictions for child abuse in a court overseas were known about by British authorities but ruled out by police during criminal record checks when he took the job in 2007.
He was given four indeterminate sentences for public protection on separate charges of sexual assault of a child at Blackfriars Crown Court.
Strict legal rules to protect the identity of the child prevent the abuser’s name and the full details of the case being reported.
The man was subject to an enhanced criminal records check before taking a job at the private taxi firm which operates Camden’s school-run taxis.
But the Met police said yesterday (Wednesday) that, although his convictions appeared as “intelligence” in the Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) check in 2006, the officer who handled the query had taken the decision to give the abuser a clear CRB because the convictions could not be “corroborated”.
The officer was apparently unaware that the abuser had been arrested by another Met team, the extradition unit, in 2003, and had appeared in court, where his convictions had been fully disclosed.
A Met spokeswoman said: “The decision-making process can be challenging and has to be made based on the information available to the officer conducting the check.”
She confirmed that the Met had carried out no internal investigations into this case.
The council has issued the family of the victim with an apology and called on police to investigate the CRB system.
