Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 20 August 2009

Worry for private tenants

• IT was a great sadness to see the number of worried faces at the packed meeting of held by the Camden Federation of Private Tenants last Tuesday week.
The current legislation laid down and operated by the Rent Officer for Protected Tenants is based on a formula governed by the
All Items Index (RPI).
Every two years this comes into play. landlords seeking a rent increase would currently be awarded an additional increase of 8 per cent.
Obviously this is very much out of kilter with the current trend of falling rents.
The formula needs to be changed.
The anxieties being experienced by the elderly, whose pension and savings increases will not match the 8 per cent rent increase, is obvious.
Something needs to be done by government quickly.
