Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 20 August 2009

It’s the physics stupid. . .

• YOUR reader (Exhausted by the stupid people who drive cars, August 13) is justified in railing against foolish drivers who leave their engine running while listening to the radio. The driver does this to prevent the battery from draining.
They are both correct.
Under normal use, a car radio draws a tiny current, probably half an amp. This means that if the motorist were to sit in the car with it on for 160 hours continuously, the battery would be flat.
The real moral to this story is that it is a great shame that Physics no longer gets the same priority in schools that it has enjoyed in the past. This subject is very much a part of life, and should get the recognition that it is due.
