Rap artist Donaeo gets the message across |
Taking a mic stand Performers rap anti-knife and gun crimes message to youths
DANCE star Donaeo set the tone with his chart hit Party Hard – and that’s exactly what the 300 assembled teenagers did on Friday at the Shaw Theatre.
As the main attraction of the second One Mic One Life event, Donaeo and a clutch of other performers took to the stage at the Euston theatre.
The night was organised by Chalk Farm housing team One Housing Group, with the aim of bringing together young people from youth clubs within Camden as well as from other parts of London. The main message of the night was to put down knives and guns and encourage young people to talk out their differences instead.
Parliament Hill schoolgirl Koryn Ferdinand rapped to the crowds on Friday, delivering her anti-violence message.
The 15-year-old, who admitted she has been involved in fights in the past, said: “I’ve grown up now and I’ve learned violence doesn’t solve anything. Once you’ve had a fight, what’s that proved? If you have differences just talk it out. There’s no need for violence.”
As part of the overall anti-weapons drive, a project organised by One Housing and the Castlehaven Youth Club will begin next month involving young people at risk of offending or those who may have committed crimes in the past.
Youths from within Camden’s borders, who are themselves known to have strong rivalries, will meet to discuss the issues that concern them, and will set the agenda for discussions. Police and council staff are expected to take part.
