Family challenge Patel autopsy
THE family of a man found dead in a hotel have criticised an autopsy report by former Home Office pathologist Dr Freddy Patel which failed to explain how he had died.
The body of computer expert Andrew Morgan, 28, was discovered by staff at the Premier Inn in Dukes Road, Euston, in April.
Dr Patel was suspended from the government register of accredited pathologists in June while an investigation into his work is carried out.
Although Mr Morgan, from Stoke-on-Trent, was a diabetic who needed regular insulin injections, the pathologist said it was “difficult to prove” low blood sugar levels had caused the death.
He told a St Pancras inquest last Tuesday that he believed Mr Morgan may have died of sudden adult death syndrome (SADS), a rare heart condition that affects only 500 people a year in the UK.
Mr Morgan’s father, who was not named in court, told Dr Patel: “Forgive me, but it seems you’re giving this conclusion because you can’t think of anything else.
“You’re talking about possibilities and probabilities – this is my son here. I don’t feel exhaustive tests have been done.”
Coroner Gail Helliman, who recorded an open verdict, asked Dr Patel: “Wouldn’t it be closer to the truth to simply describe it as an unascertained death?”
Dr Patel said: “We’ve done everything we can to find the cause of death.”
