Sell-off freeze plea is ignored

Tenants’ call for a moratorium on council home sales rejected by Lib Dems

THE Town Hall has ignored calls for a freeze on council house sales – and listed another batch of properties for auction.
Lib Dem councillors were begged to halt the sales, which have been ordered to raise money for Camden’s housing department.
The cash is being used to buy new kitchens and bathrooms for council flats – but tenants want the money to be come from government investment.
They appealed to the council last week in the hope that a unified campaign of tenants, councillors and MPs could work together and march on Whitehall.
The argument – so far ignored by the Lib Dems – is that every home that is sold off is a missed opportunity for the thousands of people stranded on the waiting list for homes.
The council insists that it has to be pragmatic in order to kick-start a home refurbishment project.
Another point of dispute is the condition of the homes being sold off.
Camden insists only properties in need of huge refurbishment are being sold off, although the New Journal found buyers who said at least one was in “good condition”.
The latest homes for sale includes homes in Parsifal Road, West Hampstead, and Regent's Park Road in Primrose Hill.
