Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 6 August 2009

Rowton’s vision must survive

• I HAVE been following the reports and correspondence in the Camden New Journal and have been very troubled to read that Rowton House (now Arlington House) may be sold for private development.
This seems a betrayal of the vision and generosity of Lord Rowton, a philanthropist who donated money to fund a building designed to provide shelter for homeless men in London.
When my husband and I worked as GPs in Camden Town in the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s we used to visit patients in Rowton. Yes, it was like a barracks. Yes, the single room accommodation was basic. But it provided a clean, warm shelter for people otherwise living on the streets.
Surely Lord Rowton’s vision should be respected. The need is still there.
