Theft at YMCA a ‘blow to projects’
A CHARITY has said its work in prisons and with the homeless will be set back by a break-in in which burglars raided donations on Friday.
The YMCA charity shop in Camden Town was burgled by thieves who cracked open the safe and broke open a charity box.
Shop manager Youseff Sbaa, 32, said burglars also took mobile phones and a bread knife when they broke through a first floor window at the back of the Camden High Street store, which opened in April.
The YMCA’s store support manager Jan Grove said: “Our money goes to our projects, to help the homeless or put mentors in schools against bullying, or working with people in prisons.”
Detectives are investigating the break-in after forensic teams found fingerprints at the scene.
A Camden police spokesman said: We were called to a burglary overnight on Thursday at a premises in Camden High Street where a quantity of cash was stolen. No arrests [were made and], enquiries continue.”
There were 1,706 non-residential burglaries in Camden in the last 12 months, a rise of 15 per cent on the previous year. |
