Charity to chase playing field
CAMPAIGNERS for a community sports club are set to meet council bosses in a bid to persuade the Town Hall to sell them a disused playing field.
Chase Lodge playing fields in Barnet, used by generations of Camden schoolchildren, will be sold as the council looks for ways to cut maintenance costs.
It was given the freeholds to the land in 1990, and is now considering three ways of selling the grounds and its groundskeeper’s cottage, including selling them on the open market, separately or as one lot.
Newly formed charity the Camden Community Football and Sports Association (CCFSA) are hoping the council will sell the freehold or a long-term lease to them, to provide a permanent home for youth team Hampstead FC and the rising semi-professional outfit Kentish Town FC.
CCFSA chairwoman Diane Culligan said: “Our preferred option would be to include the cottage as well, because if it did get sold it would reduce our ability to have facilities on the site.”
The Town Hall’s finance chief Councillor Ralph Scott, said: “We want to give the CCFSA a crack at getting hold of the site, but we have to reserve our judgment until the bids are in.”
The CCFSA will give a deputation when Chase Lodge is discussed at the Town Hall Resources and Corporate Performance Scrutiny committee on Tuesday. |
