Housing chiefs hit back over sell-offs
HOUSING chiefs have tried to play down the results of a New Journal survey which showed tenants are almost universally against the Town Hall policy of selling off council homes to raise money.
Amid widespread criticism of the Liberal Democrat and Conservative coalition’s consultation process which housing chiefs claimed showed support for the policy, reporters surveyed Camden’s estates for themselves and found the opposite reaction. No support. Tenant after tenant called on the council to have a re-think.
But rather than embrace the results, council chiefs began a rearguard action with both Keith Moffitt, the leader of the Liberal Democrats, and Andrew Marshall, the Tory chief, firing off letters challenging the purpose of the ring-around.
Both sides of the coalition are refusing to agree to the simple request from tenants to freeze the sales while a campaign for direct government investment is fought.
The Camden Federation of Tenants and Association is investigating the nature of the consultation and how it amounts to a genuine mandate to sell off homes with thousands on the waiting list for council properties. More homes are due to go under the hammer later this month. The coalition insists the money will be reinvested into repairing council homes. |
