Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 16 July 2009

Privatising health

• I NOTE there is a public meeting tonight (July 16) to again protest the privatisation of doctors’ surgeries in Camden at which Frank Dobson MP is to speak.
This reminded me that prior to his abortive attempt to become Mayor of London he was the Secretary of State for Health and in that role introduced the 1999 Health Act which directly enabled doctors’ surgeries to be privatised.
Mr Dobson then supported the wholesale introduction of PFI when he voted for the Finance Bill on April 30 2002; a bill which announced that the initiative would be extended into primary care.
As health secretary he had the opportunity to take a tough stance and oppose the prospect of the privatisation of surgeries which his Health Act would cause. He did not do so. Instead he chose to support the Labour government just as he subsequently did over the closure of Camden’s post offices.
