Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 16 July 2009

Need for two or three additional forms of entry

• LINDA Grove misrepresented my comments in her letter (Schools crisis is no one-off, July 9).
In the previous New Journal I did not say that I need convincing that the current increase in demand for primary school places is a “one-off”, as I’ve stated repeatedly, I am fully convinced of the need for additional school places.
What I said was that the primary schools we have been approaching to see if they will accept “bulge” classrooms have quite rightly wanted to know whether this would be a one-off request for them to take a temporary classroom or whether Camden was, de facto, seeking them to take an additional classroom each year for the foreseeable future.
Establishing Camden Courthope Education Centre in September, for reception-age pupils who are without a primary school place, provides us with a short-run solution to the school places issue.
While welcome, this is not a permanent solution to the issue.
Last week, the latest school roll projections from the Greater London Assembly showed for the first time that across Camden as a whole there will be a need for between two and three additional forms of entry.
Our attention will now focus on building a case for additional permanent primary school places to the government, with either a new school or expansion at one or more of our primaries the aim.

Executive Member for Schools
