Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 16 July 2009

Lobbying the government is no answer

• PETER Wright (Letters July 9) raises some important points about administration costs in Camden’s housing service, and certainly reducing costs both in our Housing Revenue Account and other services is an important priority for us.
But it’s a shame that the New Journal’s coverage, yet again, has focused exclusively on the sale of a very small number of properties, rather than the new kitchens and bathrooms, and electrical wiring, that thousands of our tenants are now getting as a result of the council administration’s willingness to take difficult decisions.
Simply saying “we must lobby the government harder” is not a responsible strategy, given the attitude it has taken for the last few years.
We are selling up to 500 homes, compared to a council housing stock of 23,800 homes, and so far the sale of 66 void units has raised over £25million. This is the best strategy on offer to fund Decent Homes, which is why as a responsible council, looking out for the long term wellbeing of tenants, we are doing this, even though it’s not necessarily popular or understood at present.
CLLR ANDREW MARSHALL
Conservative Group Leader
