Prised away: PM wife presents awards at former school

SHE set up one of the most successful PR companies in Britain and happens to be the wife of the Prime Minister – but Sarah Brown still found time to present prizes to pupils at Acland Burghley for a year of amazing achievements at the school.
At the event, which was held at the Bloomsbury Theatre in Bloomsbury, Mrs Brown, who as Sarah Macaulay attended the Tufnell Park school in the 1970s, told pupils that she was proud to feel part of its “extended family”.
She said: “I found Burghley gave me just the right springboard to soar from, because we are more than a school – we are a family. For me and my friends this always felt like home – the place that made us who we are.”
And she said Burghley, with its diverse intake, was a celebration of the best an inclusive comprehensive school could offer.
“What today shows is that so-called ordinary schools are full of extraordinary talent – inspiring teachers who bring out the best in pupils destined to make their mark on the world,” said Mrs Brown.
“If I leave you with just one message today, it’s the sense that you are all unique, all special, all here for a reason.”
Greeting Mrs Brown was a newly formed committee of pupils called the ABS Arts Council, a committee who help organise and direct arts events including drama and music performances. They helped stage-manage the awards ceremony.
The Council all agreed that Acland Burghley’s continuing success as an arts college was down to the teachers.
Council member Hatty Brock, 14, said: “The teachers have real passion for arts and are given the authority to do our work.”
