Staff are at the top of our agenda
• UNIVERSITY College London Hospital always puts its staff, and particularly its nurses, at the top of the agenda.
Consequently we found your Comment of June 25, which suggested this wasn’t the case, more than misleading.
Long gone are the days when hospitals provided accommodation to their staff. The vast majority of our employees prefer to find their own residence.
As a result, the trust sold John Astor House to a housing association in 2001 and those residents became its tenants with rent protection. In total they represent a tiny fraction of trust staff and the majority of residents at John Astor House are not employed by UCLH.
The trust still provides external heating and hot water to the building and these are currently being upgraded. Unfortunately there have been unpredictable problems during this work and apologies have been made to the residents.
UCLH would like to re-emphasise that the prime responsibility for the upkeep of the building lies with the housing association and the trust will continue to work with them as and when requested.
