Camden Sports - MATCH POINT by STEVE BARNETT
Published: 25 June 2009

Murray, the great Brit hope, or Scot, or not!

THIS week welcomed the start of Wimbledon, and with it Murray Mania.
It seems it would have been far too simple to just focus on his ability and discuss whether or not he has a real chance of winning the prestigious tennis tournament.
Instead everyone wanted to talk about his personalty or whether the English should back him or not following his ill-judged crack about supporting anyone but England in the 2006 World Cup.
To save you sleepless nights let me share with you the formula that certain parts of the media use.
If Andy Murray wins Wimbledon he is British, a proud beacon for this unified nation of ours.
If he loses, he is Scottish.
It’s that simple.
For the record I think we should get behind Murray and support anyone who has had to face the same challenges that these little islands of ours throws at us, from penny-pinching MPs to pebbled-filled beaches and week- long summers.
Concentrating too much on statehood can become confusing. Just look at rugby player Nathan Hines, who was suspended for a week after being found guilty of making a dangerous tackle during Tuesday’s game against the Emerging Springboks.
He’s an Australia-born Scotland international playing for the British and Irish Lions.
If that doesn’t give you a headache, nothing will.
