Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 25 June 2009

Trying for a school place

• IN the article about the lack of primary school places in Camden (Town Hall locked in talks with schools as places crisis deepens, June 18), Camden denies having advised parents to take school places in Westminster and Islington.
My son has not been offered any school in Camden (our home address is not close enough to any school which is not a faith school) and we have appealed against this.
In response to our appeal Camden is asking the panel that “given that alternative places are available, it would be inefficient use of resources to overfill one school while another has vacancies... The LA therefore asks the committee not to uphold this appeal”.
The list of schools given by the council are:
• two schools in Camden (which no longer have spaces available);
• 13 schools in Islington (where the closest school to our home address is 2.6 miles away), the rest are more than three and four miles;
• five schools in Westminster.

A mess

• ON the issue of primary school places in Belsize, it must be noted that solutions to the problem are available.
The council has committed to setting up temporary classrooms ready for September to ensure a primary school place for every child.
Neighbouring Gospel Oak is a ward where sites have been identified and negotiations are well advanced.
What we need is the Lib Dems to stop politicising this issue and start working with all parties to get a fair deal for parents and children in Belsize.
The Lib Dems run the council and should take responsibility for the mess.
