Greatest hits? Pop stars make way for boxers at Koko
IT may be better known for knockout performances from Madonna and Prince, but a Camden Town nightclub has found that another form of entertainment has a bit more punch.
Koko – the former Camden Palace – in Camden High Street staged its first boxing bouts with nine fights on Sunday.
It marked the first time Koko or any commercial venue in Camden, apart from the Irish Centre in Murray Street, has hosted a boxing match.
Brett James, one of the biggest names on Sunday’s bill who won his fight in the second round, called it the “the new biggest thing out there,” that was “up and coming big-time”.
The Koko show was organised the way most matches are: a promoter chooses a venue, signs up boxers and hands them tickets to sell.
Koko’s manager Mike Hamer, who made the booking and watched the fights, said it was professionally run and licensed by the Independent Boxing Association, but wouldn’t confirm whether he would book a similar event again.
Koko director Larry Seymour said it was “a bit of new business for us”.
He added: “We’re almost like the village hall, we’re a space for hire. But sometimes we do something and say we won’t do it again, and it’s not an open door, we turn a lot of things away.” |
