Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 28 May 2009

Danger at the junction

• I WAS pleased to see your coverage concerning the dangerous junction of Marchmont Street and Tavistock Place (‘We need action fast at 3-second crossing junction,’ May 21).
It’s incredibly frustrating that both pedestrians and cyclists have to wait so long before they can go. I can see why so many make a dash for it or jump the red lights.
The Marchmont Street Association has made some sensible suggestions for improvements, including for more crossing time for pedestrians, and says these were adopted by a group reporting to Transport for London. These recommendations must not be allowed to sit on a desk gathering dust. They must be taken seriously, and implemented.
I have written to Caroline Pidgeon, who chairs the London Assembly’s transport committee, and would urge others to do the same. She has promised to take this up with the mayor, who controls the money for road safety capital projects. I also call on Chris Knight, Camden’s executive member for road safety, to exert what influence he has on both TfL and council officers, who need to make a bid to TfL, to make this happen.
