Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 21 May 2009

Local fears about the future of play centre site

• THE Weedington Road Play Centre in Gospel Oak is a much needed facility for young people.
Closed for “refurbishment”, work is still not completed despite the continued postponement of its opening. Before its closure in August it was much underused; a tragedy given the need for more activities in an area starved of resources. I understand that the refurbishment has cost in the region of £1million.
Nobody can begrudge high class facilities in Gospel Oak for young people, especially as the area has been shamefully neglected over the last three years.
However, there are fears of plans to develop the play centre and adjoining sites into a private and commercial development within the next few years. This would, presumably, involve the demolition of the centre and the total waste of £1million of taxpayers’ money.
Information on this is hard to come by and council officers have failed to discuss their plans for the play centre with the local community.
