Hot tickets Sales for Springfest far exceed last year’s – despite the crunch

BUMPER bookings and scintillating performances have marked this year’s Springfest, the rebranded Hampstead and Highgate festival.
Now into its 11th year, the organisers have offered a week-long mix of leading classical musicians and best-selling authors and artistic director George Vass said he was thrilled with the ticket sales and the quality of performances.
“We have sold far more tickets than last year,” he said. “It’s knocked me out how well the sales have gone, especially considering the current times.”
The literary talks included New Journal contributor Piers Plowright interviewing Margaret Drabble, Kate Summerscale and Philip Norman.
He said that Margaret revealed the secret of lasting peace within families.
Her most recent book combines her family’s story with the history of the jigsaw puzzle – and the jigsaw had hidden qualities that spread peace and calm.
He said: “Margaret spoke of how writing helps stave off depression – as does doing jigsaws. And the secret to a peaceful family Christmas is to find the biggest jigsaw you can get your hands on, and all settle down to do it together.”
Other highlights included a guided walk through Hampstead Village on Wednesday by guide Peter Glancy whose route yesterday (Wednesday ) illustrated the quirky tale of how pre-spa Hampstead was used to do the monarch’s laundry because of the quality and abundance of spring water in the area.
