Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 14 May 2009

Sacking Zac would be a loss to our community

• I AM the mother of two teenaged boys and I have lived in the borough of Camden all my life.
Mr Zac Roswell, who is a basketball coach at Talacre sports centre, has coached my two sons for more than five years (Don’t sack our coach, plead kids, May 7). Not only is he a dedicated basketball coach, he is also a mentor to young children, and a positive role model.
We live in challenging times, and young people are faced with sometimes life-changing decisions every day. Mr Roswell has inspired and continues to inspire young people to make the right choices in life. He has certainly infused in my sons the importance of living a healthy life and staying away from the influence of drugs and alcohol.
He encompasses all these things into his training sessions. His approach is tough, but his end result creates young people year after year who are empowered to be the best that they can be.
I am deeply concerned that Mr Roswell’s job at Talacre is at risk. Surely it would be ludicrous to remove such an important figure from the community owing to lack of funding. I understand that the funding from Sport England has come to an end, but if the government is as committed to supporting positive activities in the community, as it claims to be, then why is this being allowed to happen? If Mr Roswell’s job and the future of Talacre sports centre are to be no more, I believe it will have an extremely detrimental effect on the community as a whole.
