Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 14 May 2009

Labour group’s new leader is a real inspiration

• I WAS delighted with your Twitter update about Councillor Nasim Ali winning the election for the leadership of the Camden Labour group.
This is almost as exciting for Camden as President Barack Obama winning the presidential race to the White House.
I remember the days when it was dangerous for people from black and minority ethnic communities to be out late at night.
Now we can proudly say that Councillor Ali is making history again as the first person from the Bangladeshi community to be the leader of the Labour group.
I am not a Labour Party member but I have been following the work of Councillor Ali ever since he was the Mayor of Camden and I am very impressed at what he has achieved in that short time.
Councillor Ali is a real inspiration for young people like me, who wouldn’t normally be interested in politics.
I believe that the election of Councillor Ali as the leader of the Labour group will inspire lots of young people to get involved with local politics.

Delight

• I WAS delighted to hear Nasim Ali was elected as Camden Labour group’s leader.
This is refreshing news for the people of Camden. I used to go to school with Nash and he is a wonderful, caring person who has grown up in Camden and is now helping the people of Camden.
Nash was always an excellent leader. His work with Camden United helped to heal a real wound and unite young people across racial and territorial divides. This led to him to winning various national and local awards including the Camden Good Citizen award in 1998.
Nash will inspire people from all different backgrounds to get involved within the democratic process.

Selective

• MIKE Katz (Change is welcomed, May 7) seems to be suffering selective amnesia.
He suggests Labour are the only party who field candidates who serve their full terms on the council.

Has he forgotten it was Lucy Anderson, former Labour councillor in Kentish Town, who left six months after being elected, following her party’s resounding defeat in May 2006?
As for the view that Labour is planning to field former councillors as candidates next year because they bring experience and knowledge, how does that sit with the brutal deselection of Councillor Brian Woodrow?
