People’s needs ignored in King’s Cross sell-off plan
• AS a resident of King’s Cross I am upset to read about the plans to sell off some of the Calthorpe Project (Calthorpe Project is hit by sell-off plans, April 30).
I live off Gray’s Inn road and do not have one tree, bush or flower on my street.
When I wrote to the council to ask them to plant some trees they replied saying there was not enough room, even though the pavement is wider than many residential streets with trees, and quite lacking in pedestrians walking down it.
The Calthorpe Project, Camley Street and Coram’s Fields are the only green spaces for my daughter and other children to play in King’s Cross.
It seems all the regeneration of the area is being focused on business and retail instead of the local community.
Even if the sell-off is for housing it still seems like madness to encourage more people to live in an area that lacks so many resources for the local population.
It was only recently in the news that the estimate for deaths in London due to pollution was more like 3,000 per year as opposed to 1,000.
It is our children and elderly people who will be most affected by this.
Without more green spaces in King’s Cross we are putting their lives at risk from pollution, not to mention the fact that children need places to exercise outdoors to combat obesity and stay healthy.
The Calthorpe Project is one of very few places like this in King’s Cross and needs to be preserved. Haven’t developers taken enough chunks out of our community already?
