Outraged: Divas slam ‘ridiculous’ licensing rules
THEY are rarely the attire of choice for angry demonstrators, but leotards and suspenders engulfed the steps of the Town Hall as burlesque dancers protested the council’s “ridiculous” licensing laws on Tuesday.
In response to Camden’s decision to classify burlesque as “adult entertainment”, performers chanted “We are not sex workers, we’re divas” and pretended to chain themselves to the railings in Judd Street.
Camden’s tightening of the licensing conditions has attracted national interest since the New Journal revealed the Proud Gallery had cancelled its burlesque shows because of council pressure a fortnight ago.
But Town Hall bosses insisted the protest was misdirected.
“Camden is not preventing burlesque troops from performing,” a council spokeswoman said. “Anyone applying for a premises licence or varying their current licence is simply required to state what entertainment they wish to provide and based on this, conditions are attached to the licence,” |
