Lots at steak! Pub holds pudding contest
PIG’S trotters or venison? Sesame oil or ale? These were the difficult culinary decisions faced by entrants hoping to win a historic steak pudding competition held on bank holiday Monday – claimed to be the first of its kind in the world.
The contest at the Pineapple pub in Leverton Street, Kentish Town, was adjudicated by three independent judges, including celebrity chef Richard Fox. Seventeen entrants took part, but not all puddings were of a strictly traditional nature. One chef opted to use a venison filling, while another created a Provencal take on the pudding with walnut pastry. More experimental still, Jo Shaw produced a pudding featuring pig’s trotters.
But there could only be one winner. “Thumbs were being twiddled and there were nervous coughs as the judging took place,” said barman Chris Davis. The winner was Tim Cooper with a steak and ale pie, closely followed by his wife Sarah who claimed second prize for her skirt of beef and truffle oil offering.
“Then the vultures descended and the puddings disappeared in an instant!” joked Mr Davis. |
