Green Fair latest victim of recession

THE Camden Green Fair – which attracted 20,000 people last year – has been cancelled this summer after falling victim to the recession.
Despite being advertised to take place at Regent’s Park on Sunday, June 7, organisers have pulled the plug.
Wendy Baverstock, chairwoman of the Fair’s board of trustees, said: “Obviously we’re all committed to the Fair and wanted to put it on. It’s a difficult time financially and a lot of funders are assessing their priorities, and from that point of view we thought it would be easier to resource next year’s event.”
She said an exhibition detailing the Fair’s 20-year history would be held instead, charting its roots at St James’ Gardens in Euston, organised by a few green-minded locals, to its move to Regent’s Park in 2005.
Lib Dem councillor Alexis Rowell, the council’s eco-champion and a trustee of the Green Fair, said he was disappointed it was cancelled, but looked forward to it “bouncing back” next year. He said: “Like much of Britain, the Green Fair has been hit by the recession. There is simply less funding available from all sources – from sponsorship, from local government from stallholders, and from grants.”
A council spokeswoman said they had offered the same level of funding in sponsorship as last year.
