Does new warden regime restrict OAPs’ freedom?
• AN old friend now lives in sheltered accommodation on the Denton estate in Malden Crescent and she is very concerned at recent changes there.
Until recently the wardens would check on her via the intercom system in her flat. Now she has to wait twice a week until a warden comes to her door to see if she is still alive.
She is an out-and-about type of person, though timid of confronting officials and she feels this is restricting her freedom.
Some others there also prefer the old system but understand that the housebound need to be visited.
The motto of the Camden service is “promoting independence”.
I meant to talk to the wardens about it but their office is always locked.
So is Camden distancing the wardens from the tenants and maybe going the way of the London borough of Barnet which is proposing to remove resident wardens?
Tenants pay an extra £40 on their rent for the warden service so should have been asked if they wanted this change.
And it seems to me that the office should open daily.
