Swinging free: Lottery-funded playground opens
A FUN-PACKED adventure playground has opened in Fitzrovia following a five-year campaign.
The playground in Whitfield Street – including a totem pole and rope walkways – is funded with £110,000 grant money secured by the Fitzrovia Trust.
Former chairman Max Neufeld has campaigned to reopen the nursery since it was closed by the council in 2004. “Camden didn’t take us seriously at first,” he said, “but this has not cost them a penny and you can see how much it means to everyone.”
The Trust had been “very, very lucky”, he added, to be awarded the Big Lottery and Pathfinder funding. “There is more funding for things like this because people are much more in favour of children doing adventurous things,” he said. “Both central government and the mayor have had working parties on the question of children’s play and there has been a big change. There will be no more boring playgrounds. This playground is all about adventure.”
Robin Young has replaced Mr Neufeld after more than 20 years as chairman of the Fitzrovia Trust. |
