‘Changes...’ Long-service pair leave docs’

PATIENTS and doctors bid a fond farewell to two receptionists who have worked at the Camden Road Surgery for a combined 50 years.
Freda Mennell, 68, and Mary Burrows, 69, attended a special celebration and were presented with flowers, a cake and bottles of champagne.
Mrs Burrows, who lives in Albany Street, Camden Town, said she believed her long period of service at the centre, which was taken over by the US firm UnitedHealth last April, had helped with the continuity of care. She added: “There have been a lot of changes here recently. I think it’s really important that we’ve been here so long. The patients are like my friends.
“I’m looking forward to reading my newspaper in Regent’s Park and spending time with my daughter in Whitstable. I’m going to enjoy being by the sea and crabbing.”
Life was a lot different at the surgery when the pair started working there in the 1980s. The practice was housed in a cramped basement with its sole doctor living in the house above.
Mrs Mennell said: “It was absolutely nerve-wracking when I came here. But after a while I got to know the patients. We have both got to know them all really well. I won’t miss the journey in from Barnet but I’ll miss the people.”
Dr Robert Harbord said: “They always made this place a happy place to work.”
