‘Rotten inside’ lime tree topples over into path of passing lorry

A LORRY driver is lucky to be alive after a tree crashed into his vehicle while he was driving.
The lime tree uprooted itself from the pavement and fell onto the front window of the passing lorry shortly after 11am on Friday in Lyndhurst Road, Hampstead.
Witnesses said the driver, believed to be in his 20s, was taken to hospital with an injury to his arm.
One woman said: “He was trapped in the vehicle and you could see he was struggling to get his arm free. He was in shock.”
She added: “I think he is lucky to be alive.”
Police Community Support Officers helped the driver out of the lorry before an ambulance arrived.
Camden Council’s tree surgeons had chopped-up and removed the fallen tree by around 2pm.
One said: “It’s actually not that unusual for this to happen at this time of year. The tree is rotten on the inside, but you can’t tell from the outside.”
A council spokeswoman said: “The incident was reported to the council’s tree section and the tree contractor attended the scene within ten minutes to clear the lime tree from the pavement and road.
“The remaining tree stump will be removed as soon as possible and a replacement tree will be planted during next winter as part of the council’s annual tree planting programme.”
She added: “The council inspects its trees every three years and carries out any work that is necessary.”
