Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

More cameras, please – to stop aggression

• I ALWAYS hear the middle classes complain about the video cameras and their precious privacy, but I say we need more cameras to control aggression particularly among drivers.
On the morning of April 14, I was on a bus going along Bayham Street just where it turns right into Pratt Street.
All the vehicles were lined up in the right queue but one car driver was not prepared to wait, so he cut up the bus from the left, ending up in the bus lane, holding up the bus and then parking at the bus stop.
As buses cannot open the doors until the bus reaches the stop, we all had to wait. But as the car was now truly stuck at the stop, our driver finally let us out.
I was angered by the car driver’s stupidity, so I knocked on the side of his car to point out to him the bus stop sign.
He jumped out of his car, came at me with such violent aggression, grabbed hold of my walking stick and went to strike me.  Fortunately for me, two young men restrained him while he kept on repeating “No one touches my car”.
Unfortunately, I did not manage to get his registration number because I was so shaken up.
I later thought how sad that some people had become so excessively materialistic that a pile of metal on wheels was more precious to them than a human being.
I also think a camera is badly needed near that bus stop and the turn-off from Bayham Street.
